After passing of the course Biochemistry I is student mastered of overview about cell composition, structure, properties and function of basic groups of biomolecules, e.g. amino acids, proteins, saccharides, lipids and nucleic acids. Further, basic knowledge about structure of biomemrbanes and types of membrane transport are introduced and basic principles of enzyme catalysis, kinetics and regulation of enzyme activity are elucidated. Metabolic pathways of saccharide, lipid and amino acid metabolism are introduced. Next, overview about methods of isolation and characterization of biopolymers will be obtained and some applications including enzyme engineering and genetic engineering will be discussed.

Enzymology, enzyme catalysis. Substrate specificity. Cofactors. Regulation of enzyme activity.
Enzyme kinetics, Michaelis-Menten equation. Inhibition of enzymes.
Metabolic pathways. termodynamic relationships and energy-rich components.
Metabolism of saccharides, lipids and amino acids.
Nucleic acids - structure and function. DNA, RNA.
Applide biochemistry - modern biotechnology, genetic engineering.

The aim of the course Biochemistry I is to introduce cell composition and to characterize structure, properties and function of basic groups of biomolecules, e.g. amino acids, proteins, saccharides, lipids and nucleic acids.
