English for Chemists III

Familiarity with the basic demands how to make a successful oral prezentation and mastering short prezentation based on an individual choice. Practice of organic nomenclature, farther develepment of the verbalization of data and charts as they appear in specific articles. Chemistry of the environment, physical chemistry, chemical engineering. Development of the ability to understand knew expressions through the understanding prefixes and suffixes.

Course curriculum
2. week – Lesson 1 - Making an oral presentation. Examples of correct and incorrect presentations. Analysis of the most common mistakes, body language of the presentation. Practicing the opening of a presentation, preparation of the topic of own presentation.
3. week – Lesson 2 - Physical chemistry II - rate of chemical reactions, orders of reactions: development of specific vocabulary , description of other terms referring to the given topic. Development of reading for both gist and specific information. Development of oral and written skills through asking and answering questions. Watching authentic video clip leading to the independent description of the chemical reaction involved.
4. week- Lesson 3- Environmental chemistry- Familiarity with the terms applying to the individual environmental compartments encluding their pollution, waste and waste treatment, sustainable development, etc. Development of the all 4 skills so that students were able to define individual terms (namely different sciences) and to describe the differences between these terms. Written and oral description of charts and pictures. Conversation focused on the environmental protection. Grammar: Adverbial clauses of cause and reason.
5. week – Lesson 3 - Environmental chemistry. Thematic based listening, oral reproduction of the listening parts. Environmental quiz completion, guided panel discussion on environmental topics.
6. week –Lesson 4 - Word formation, sentence structure. Development of autonomic learning skills through the basic knowledge of morphology. Morpheme analysis and affixation. Parts of speech.
7. week – Lekce 4- Lesson 4 - Word formation, sentence structure Reading of technical texts oriented on individual specializations of the students. Morpheme analyses with the aim to understand a professional text.
8. week – Lesson 5 Chemical engineering. Definition of the specialization and the description of its history based on the knowledge of the specific vocabulary. Development of the ability to ask and answer questions based on the precise knowledge of the specific terms and their pronunciation. Development of learning autonomy through the creation of own vocabulary based on the read texts, learning text based phrases .
9. week – Lesson 6 – Heat transfer – vocabulary, reading and understanding of the tests describing individual mechanisms of heat transfer, laws of thermodynamics. Vocabulary, reading, understanding topic related texts, listening “Conduction, convection, radiation”. Completing a table, guided written and oral description of individual mechanisms of heat transfer.
10. week – Lesson 7 – Nanotechnology - vocabulary of the texts Nanotechnologies, Nanomedicine, Nanosurgery, Nanorobots etc. Listening of the videos “Nanotechnology”, “Nanomedicine” and following explanation of the topics. Guided discussion. Grammar: countable and uncountable nouns, future tense in predictions.
11. week - Lesson 8 – Composits . Vocabulary of the given topics. Definition of a composit, matrix, classification and types of composites. Listening “Next generations of composites” . Individual description of composite types.
12. week – Individual students presentation on scientific topics.
