Course curriculum
2. Type and typefaces - historical development, properties, classification, typographical measurements, styles of type and using of type. Digital fonts and code pages. Principles of letter assembly - papers and books sizes, layout of book pages, parts of book, type and paragraph formatting.
3. Sheet planning and assembly, planning layout, imposition, methods of planning. Printing plates, methods of platemaking, quality requirements.
4. Offset lithography printing plates - photomechanical and AgX/DTR methods. Plates for waterless offset. Computer to plate technologies.
5. Letterpress and flexography printing plates, photopolymer plates, CTP technologies. Gravure cylinder preparation, etching and electronic engraving, CTP technologies.
6. Printing inks, drying mechanisms, composition and production. Optical, rheological and functional properties of printing inks. Testing of inks. Types of printing inks.
7. Functions of a printing machine, machine design. Construction of sheet-fed and web-fed offset machines, transport of paper trough a machine. Dampening in offset lithography. Inking system. Impression systems. Printing pressure and blankets, printing nip.
8. Printing nip phenomena - ink transfer to the plate and ink transfer to the paper, ink transfer equations, Walker-Fetsko model. Setting of printing ink on the paper.
9. Quality control in offset lithography printing. Definition the quality of printed matter. Subjective and objective methods of quality control. Dot gain, mechanical and optical dot gain. Measurement of screen value. Densitometry.
10. Print quality assessment - register, slur, solid ink density, dot gain, print contrast, trapping, grey balance. Control strips and automatic systems for quality control.
11. Flexography. Gravure printing. Digital printing.
12. Print finishing. Unite operations in print finishing - cutting, trimming, perforating, punching, embossing, foil blocking. Folding and folding machines. Varnishing and laminating.
13. Bookbinding. Styles of binding. Methods of binding in soft cover. Methods of binding in hard cover, case binding.
