Course detail

Advanced Organic Chemistry

FCH-DC_OCHAcad. year: 2025/2026

The subject of study is the most modern trends in the fields of supramolecular chemistry, organic electronics and bio-organic electronics. The subject is focused on the application of organic synthesis to the constitution of organic molecules with precisely defined parameters. One of the main priorities is the application of organic molecules in "green technologies" aimed at both energy and bio-inspired materials usable in living systems. The focus will be on organic materials for energy harvesting, nano- and biomaterials, self-organizing systems and hybrid-organic materials usable in nano-medical applications.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The student prepares a literary research on the given topic in the scope of 10 standard pages. This is followed by an oral exam, during which the student demonstrates knowledge of the studied topic.

Aims

The aim of the course is a detailed study of selected fragments of organic chemistry and organic synthesis. The course will focus on chemistry of functional groups and its transformation, as well as methods of protecting functional groups. Students will also be introduced to modern methods of C-C bond formation and subsequent incorporation of molecules into oligomeric and polymeric structures. The course will be focused on single and multistage syntheses. Students will also learn the chemistry of dendrimers and the processes used to separate and purify organic molecules. The structure of the course is designed so that after completing this discipline students are well prepared for the study of other courses that immediately theoretically and practically follow up this study course.
