Chemistry and Technology of Binding Materials

Lectures:
Introduction, history and actual state of production and utilization of binders. Technology of production of Portland cement. Chemical and physical processes in Portland cement production. Portland cement hydratio. Blended cements, pozzolans, slag, fly ashes. Aluminate cement, production, properties and application. Special cements. Lime and lime binders. Gypsum and sulphate binders. Methods of testing and analysis of binder. Concrete - composition, classification, admixtures, additives, reinforcemen. Concrete - testing of fresh and hardened concrete. Actual trends in development of production and utilization of binders.

Laboratory course:
Properties control by ultrasonic Non-destructive methods. Determination of reology properties of hardening pastes and mortars by automatic penetrometer. Volume stability of cement. Chemical resistance of glass. Calorimetry. Determination of normal consistency. Hardening time period. Particle size distribution.

Entry knowledge

Basic knowledge from inorganic and physical chemistry and silicate technology.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Oral exam with preparation (30 min.) in the scope of the curriculum and the extent of the lectures.
The credit from lab. courses is fixed on completion of all courses and consighment of all lab. reports.
The learning is controlled by reports from individual works till 7 day after work.

Aims

The aim of course is to achieve a basic knowledge of chemistry and technology of production of Portland and aluminate cement, lime, gypsum and other types of binders. The students also gain the a knowledge of design and properties of basic types of binding materials together eith utilization of secondary mineral raw material (slags, fly ashes...)
During the laboratory course the students gain knowledge and skills of basic laboratory non-instrumental methods of testing and analyses of binders.
Knowledge of the production, composition and properties of Portland cement.
Knowledge of portland cementum hydration.
Knowledge of the properties of mixed cements and pozzolan impurities.
Knowledge of production and properties of aluminous cement.
Knowledge of production and properties lime, gypsum and their binders.
Basic orientation in concrete technology.
