Course detail
Bioengineering I
FCH-BC_BIO1Acad. year: 2025/2026
In the course Bioengineering I students will learn how to solve the system mass balances, what bioreactors exist and how they can be used and applied. Furthermore, students will learn about bioreactor mixing, aeration and mass transfer, and sterilisation conditions of bioreactor systems. The subject deals with the kinetics of enzymatic reactions, phase flow characteristics, transport cell processes, microbial kinetics and cultivation methods (batch, fed-batch and continuous system).

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
2. Conditions for passing the exam: To pass the exam it is necessary to write a test and obtain at least 50% of points. Students who have attained at least 50% of points will pass an oral exam. Both, the results of the oral exam and the written test will be included in the assessment.
ECTS classification.
Attendance at lectures is not obligatory but it is recommended. At seminars the calculations of model examples are given - attendance is obligatory.
Furthermore, in the seminars each student at the beginning of the semester will select a topic from the list created by the course guarantor and will prepare a presentation. Presentations will take place during the semester according the agreed schedule.
Aims
The output of the attendance for this course will be :
a) theoretical knowledge of basic bioengineering apparatus,
b) the ability to balance bioreactors systems,
c) skills to process bioengineering results and to apply them on practical tasks,
d) gain of overview about the present situation in the science and research in bioengineering field,
e) competence to process the final knowledge in other courses of the study field and final student's works.
