Course detail
Laboratory Classes in Hydrobiology
FCH-BC_HYB_PAcad. year: 2023/2024
The objective of the course is to give students practically oriented information about basic methods of qualitative and quantitative hydrobilogical analysis. The subject consists of following topics: Basics of microscopic techniques and fundamental principles of water sampling. The sampling of activated sludge from waste-water treatment plant and its consequent analysis, introduction to other methods of microorganisms determination in wastewater. Sampling of flowing and stagnant waters and their consequent analysis. Determination of saprobic index. Excursion to laboratories focussed on hydrobiological and microbiological examination of water.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
A prerequisite for credit obtaining is:
Elaboration protocols for practical tasks in the required quality.
Preparation of a presentation on the given topic, and 100% participation.
The above mentioned is taken into account in the final evaluation, which is based on the successful graduation of the final test (10 questions).
Oral examination in each practice lessons with aim to check the preparedness of students.
Developing of protocols for the given tasks.
Elaboration of power-point presentation.
Credit test at the end of the course.
Aims
Increased knowledge, skills and competencies of students will be reflected in the following areas:
Mastering of the practical implementation of the qualitative and quantitative hydrobiological analysis associated with handling microscopic techniques. Familiarization with sampling methods of different types of waters, sediments, benthic macroinvertebrates, phyto-and zooplankton. Understanding of saprobic index calculation and its importance for the estimation of surface water pollution. Introduction to basic standards in the field of analysis and assessment of drinking and surface water quality.
Students will be able to expand their knowledge and skills to confront it during excursion in hydrobiological and chemical laboratories of VÚVH in Brno.
