Chemistry and Technology of Cosmetic Manufacturing

The course is intended for students of bachelors study programmes of specialist subjects of Food Chemistry, Biotechnologies, Consumer Chemistry and Chemistry for Medical Applications. The objective is to provide students with basic knowledge and information from the field of cosmetology and chemistry of cosmetics, with an emphasis on the technologies and patterns of cosmetic production.
The main focus of the course is acquaintance with the themes: the meaning of cosmetics, cosmetology, cosmeceuticals; relevant legislation in the Czech Republic / European Union, quality systems in the production and distribution of cosmetic products; basics of skin anatomy and physiology; skills, possibilities and limits of cosmetics vs. pharmaceuticals; technological parameters of cosmetic raw materials, specifications of cosmetic raw materials; technology for their production and processing; biologically active substances and the rules of their technological processing; the distribution of cosmetic products according to current criteria; the technological aspects of essential cosmetic products; specifics of specific manufacturing processes; specifications of cosmetic products according to function and physical condition, principles of the formulation development; relevant technological and manufacturing processes. The lectures will include an excursion to the production company and a lecture by a practitioner on the technology of production of selected cosmetic products.
Meaning of terms cosmetics and cosmetology. Legislation in cosmetics in the Czech Republic and European Union. Anatomy and physiology of skin. Functions, possibilities and limits of cosmetics. Cosmetic raw materials. Specification of cosmetic raw materials according to their chemical composition. Specification of cosmetic raw materials according to their functions and effects. Biological active substances. Apportionment of cosmetic agents according to the actual criteria. Specification of cosmetics agents according to the physical condition. Specification of cosmetic agents according to their function.

11. Specifications of cosmetic products according to function and physical state, principles of formulation development; relevant technological and manufacturing processes.
12. Excursion to the production company.
13. Lecture of a practitioner on the technology of production of selected cosmetic products.
