Soil Protection Technology

Short- and longterm pollution of soil by anthropogenic activities - mining, agricultural acitivities, transport etc. Natural decontamination and detoxification. Survey of methods of purification, decontamination and remediation. Physical methods (evaporation, extraction, washing-out). Soil protection with the position of legislative requirements. Long-term and short-term soil pollution through anthropogenic activities - mining, agricultural activities, industry, etc. Natural detoxification and decontamination. Basic methods of cleaning, decontamination and remediation. Physical methods (evaporation, extraction, scrubbing). Mechanical methods (removal of contamined layer), chemical, biochemical, biotechnological and microbiological remediation. Specific methods according to contaminants, objects, geological (including hydrogeological) and geographical conditions, equipment, work safety and environment protection.

Based on this knowledge, they will understand the nature and principles of each type of decontamination and will be able to design basic decontamination procedures under specific conditions.

Course curriculum
1 - Definition of the concept of remediation and decontamination general princip of remediation procedures.
2 - Risk Analysis and Survey of Contaminated Territory, Risk Assessment.
3 - Definitions of the rock environment in terms of decontamination methods, main types of contaminants. Soil pollution.
4 - Problems of groundwater contamination, namely problems conected with Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids.
5 - Basic classification and principles of decontamination and remedations methods.
6 - Natural methods of remediation with a focus on biological methods.
7 - Physical and mechanical methods of decontamination and remediation.
8 - Chemical methods for decontamination and remediation.
9 - Biotechnological and microbial remediation procedures.
10 - Groundwater decontamination.
11 - Decontamination of the gases.
12 - Analysis of valid legislation of the Czech Republic and the EU.
