Course detail

Bioengineering I

FCH-BC_BIO1Acad. year: 2019/2020

In the course Bioengineering I students will learn how to solve the system mass balances, what bioreactors exist and how they can be used and applied. Furthermore, students will learn about bioreactor mixing, aeration and mass transfer, and sterilisation conditions of bioreactor systems. The subject deals with the kinetics of enzymatic reactions, phase flow characteristics, transport cell processes, microbial kinetics and cultivation methods (batch, fed-batch and continuous system).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The output of the attendance for this course will be :
a) theoretical knowledge of basic bioengineering apparatus,
b) the ability to balance bioreactors systems,
c) skills to process bioengineering results and to apply them on practical tasks,
d) gain of overview about the present situation in the science and research in bioengineering field,
e) competence to process the final knowledge in other courses of the study field and final student's works.

Prerequisites

Primary in this course is the knowledge of the basic biochemical and microbiological apparatus, in particular, it is built on the problems of enzymes, cell morphology and physiology. The ability to apply principles of chemical engineering, especially the physical description of unit operations in reactors, is also required.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in the form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week, seminars - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

During the semester and at the end of the semester, students take part on one written test focused on the calculations. The condition of the receiving credit (allowing for the exam) is to obtain 50% points. Students who do not meet this requirement may pass the test in two substitute terms in the exam period.

Exam will be in written form (30 questions, 2 hours, 100 points maximum, 55 points minimum. The additional oral exam is possible if it is necessary.

Aims

The aim of Bioengineering I is to master the basic bioengineering knowledge of bioreactor systems. One objective is to understand the kinetics process in reactors. Another goal is to achieve the ability to solve balancing industrial and laboratory tasks in the field of fermentative and enzyme technologies.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at lectures is not obligatory but it is recommended. At seminars the calculations of model examples are given - attendance is obligatory.
