Environmental analytical chemistry

Students will be made familiar with basic principles of sampling for environmental analysis; composite and individual samples. SOP for sampling. Isolation of analytes from individual matrices. Methodical procedures for analysis of selected contaminants and xenobiotics in various matrices, principles of their determination. Determination of inorganic and organic pollutants in biotic and abiotic samples. Quality systems and their application in environmental analysis. Chemometry in the field of environmental analysis.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Obtaining of theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of chemical analysis of environmental and biotic samples
1. Student become familiar with the differences in environmental analysis and the method of evaluating the matrix effect
2. Student will acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge to establish standard operating procedures in environmental sampling and analysis of environmental
3. Student will gain experience with the selection of appropriate analytical methods for trace analysis on certain concentration levels
4. Student will gain experience with the selection of appropriate analytical methods for trace analysis on certain concentration levels
5. Student will learn to camp out all types of uncertainties in environmental analysis; demonstrate their knowledge by establishing the specific analytical data

Prerequisites

Completion of the course Environmental Chemistry and Subject Instrumental and structural analysis. Conditions to apply for the examination of the environmental analysis is the exam of instrumental and structural analysis.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Oral examination summarizing all the lessons learned from the field of applied analytical chemistry - environmental chemistry; presentation of processed essay

Block 1
1. Subject environmental analysis and its differences compared with classical analytical chemistry
2. The issue of sampling in environmental matrices
2. Trace and ultratrace analysis, chemometry, metrological aspects of environmentasl analysis.
Block 2
1. Preanalytical procedures - isolation of analytes from abiotic and biotic matrices, clean-uú of extracts and leachates
2. Methods based on application of gas chromatography, including hyphenated techniques
3. Methods based on application of liquid chromatography, including hyphenated techniques
Block 3
1. Electromigration techniques applied in environmental analysis
2. Spectrophotometry applied in environmental analysis
Block 4
1. Chemometry and quality assurance/quality control systems
2. Accreditation in environmental laboratory
Block 5
1. Examples of analytical procedures for determination of selected biologically active compounds and selected inorganic and organic pollutants
