Course detail
Chemical Informatics I
FCH-BCT_CHI1Acad. year: 2012/2013
The objective of the course is to provide students with the advanced knowledge and skills from the field of Chemical Informatics, which are necessary for following study of chemical subjects. The introduction of the course deals with basic terminology and fundamentals of chemical information science. The course focuses on advanced computer operation and utilization, especially on creation and processing of professional documents (reports, protocols, term and bachelor theses) as well as data processing and fundamentals of statistics. During the course study, there is strongly emphasized the application of acquired knowledge in chemical practice. Together with Chemical Informatics II, the subjects are drawn up in the frames of European Computer Driving License certificate.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
1) The students will master the advanced level of utilizing information technologies together with using of information databases, which will also be enhanced during the following course.
2) The students will develop the competences to master the text processors on an advanced level, including the employing of automated numbering, automated contents, cross-references, title links, revision monitoring and mass correspondence. Students will also learn how to keep the standards of typography.
3) Students will gain the knowledge how to use the spreadsheet editors, in particular the mathematical, logical, text, search and statistical operations with employment of related formulas and functions. Students will master the creation of advanced charts and their exploiting for data analysis as well as the work with lists of data, data searching and filtering with employing of pivot tables and pivot charts. Students will understand the fundamentals of probability distributions, descriptive statistics and linear regression.

Aims
Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences
In terms of the course, the students have the autoevaluation and communication tolls available via the elearning portal, so they have the possibility to consult the ways to solve the given tasks with the lectors. The students’ progress during the course is controlled and evaluated always after the completion of topic part of the course, utilizing running term tests.
