Original Abstract
In the biotechnology industry, microalgae are often used by microorganisms, especially for the production of important metabolites such as chlorophylls, carotenoids (which are important antioxidants), but also fatty acids, sterols or ubiquinone. This study focuses on the mixotrophic mode of nutrition of autotrophic microalgae. Different types of alcohols were added to the culture medium during cultivation, as a carbonaceous substrate, in order to increase the production of the mentioned metabolites. Desmodesmus quadricaudea (CCALA 464), Chlorella minutissima (CCALA 916), Desmodesmus subscapitus (CCALA 688) and Scendesmus pleiomorphus (CCALA 460) strains were selected for the experiments. Alcohols - methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol and glycerol were chosen as carbon source. These carbon substrates were added to the culture medium at different concentrations. Optical density and quantum yield were observed during cultivation. Afterwards, the biomass as well as the medium was analyzed by different chromatographic methods. It was shown that the autotrophic microorganisms used were able to survive in the environment of added alcohol or use alcohol for mixotrophic mode of nutrition. These findings could be used in the future, for example, for cocultivation with other heterotrophic microorganisms.
