Original Abstract
The global consumption of pharmaceuticals (PhACs) is rising with population growth, leading to increased environmental contamination. Households and hospitals release PhACs into wastewater, which treatment plants often cannot fully process, contaminating watercourses. In agriculture, the use of wastewater for irrigation and livestock manure containing drug residues introduces these substances into the soil [1]. Even at low concentrations, the presence of antibiotics and their metabolites contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, posing a significant risk to human health [2]. Pharmaceutical residues that reach the soil undergo various biotic and abiotic processes, including uptake by plants. Plants uptake PhACs through their roots from soil water and subsequently, they are translocated to the above-ground parts and accumulated in tissues. The accumulation of PhACs in crops for human consumption poses potential health risks due to longterm intake of trace amounts [3]. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the accumulation of a mixture of pharmaceutical residues in the root vegetable radish (Raphanus sativus).
