Original Abstract
This study monitors presence of selected drug residues in two river streams in Czech Republic. Drugs and their residues are discharged to the sewer systems together with the urine and faeces and enter the sewage treatment plant, where they are not completely removed. They can enter to the environment, where they can induce negative effects on organisms in water ecosystem. The study applies high performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection Time-of-Flight (GCxGC-TOF MS) for determination of selected drug residues. HPLC-MS was used for determination of drugs from the group of sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfaacetamide, sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole, sulfapyridine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole), used mainly in veterinary medicine, and GCxGC-TOF MS was used for determination of drugs from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (salicylic acid, clofibric acid, ibuprofen, caffeine, naproxen, mefenamic acid, ketoprofen, diclofenac), used in human even veterinary medicine. Presence of selected contaminants was monitored in Svratka and Svitava rivers in Moravia region in Czech Republic. Samples were equally collected along the whole river streams in March 2011. Solid phase extraction method (SPE) was used for extraction and preconcentration of analytes. Limits of detection were ranged from 0.24 to 2.55 ug/L for sulfonamides analysed by HPLC-MS and from 0.18 to 5 ng/L from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs analysed by GCxGC-TOF MS; both ranges depending on specific compound. In both monitored streams were found in some of samling places only following drugs: from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with range of concentrations from units to hundreds of ng/L: salicylic acid, ibuprofen, caffeine, naproxen, ketoprofen and diclofenac; from the group of sulfonamide antibiotics with range of concentrations from tenths to units of ug/L: sulfaacetamide, sulfathiazole, sulfapyridine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole.
