Original Abstract
The paper presents results of coagulation experiments dealing with the influence of temperature upon particles aggregation in treatment of humic water. Different aluminium coagulants and biopolymer chitosan were used as coagulant. Biopolymer chitosan is an emerging coagulant, applicable in water treatment. Most of amine groups of chitosan in acetic solution are protonated and they can attract particles with negative surface charge (e. g. humic substances, bacteria, macromolecules). The results show that coagulation efficiency and optimal dose of chitosan are dependent on pH. Coagulation with aluminium sulphate was negatively influenced by low water temperature, but results with chitosan and prepolymerised aluminium coagulants were hardly affected by low temperature. This is very important for drinking water treatment as alternative coagulants to aluminium sulphate could assist to overcome problems in cold water treatment with aluminium sulphate in existing waterworks.
