Original Abstract
Lignite mined in the Czech Republic, South-Moravian region is used only as a fuel in power plants. For its specific chemical composition, especially high content of humic substances, lignite should be viewed as a valuable raw material. We have started a project aimed at chemical and material exploitation of lignite. Due to economical demands one of very important viewpoints is as low cost of alternative application as possible. Consequently, we concentrate primarily on properties and applications of lignite in its natural state, with minimum treatment. Potential applications which are now under investigation and development include: natural lignite as a sorbent for both inorganic and organic pollutants, natural lignite in agriculture (plant nutrition support), lignite as a source of humic acids, and as a polymer filler. This contribution presents selected results from ongoing research.
