Original Abstract
A new trend in biotechnology has become the effort to valorise waste substrates with the help of microorganisms, namely red yeasts. Carotenogenic yeasts are a group of microorganisms that have proven to be significant producers of many valuable metabolites. Moreover, these yeasts show enormous potential in the processing of waste substrates. Microalgae are autotrophic or semi-autotrophic eukaryotic microorganisms. They are capable of producing a similar range of metabolites as yeasts, but they are also enriched with the production of chlorophylls, xanthines, and other beneficial metabolites. Biotechnologists are working on the idea of co-cultivating these two types of microorganisms. Within the framework of this study, the aim was to test the co-cultivation of the yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa with some the semi-autotrophic microalgae of the genera Chlorella, Desmodesmus, Scenedesmus and Coccomyxa on selected hemp waste products. Produced mixed yeast-algae biomass was characterized regarding the content of valuable metabolites, such as carotenoid pigments, ubiquinone, sterols, lipid compounds, fatty acids, β-glucans, and others. Moreover, using technical hemp material as a substrate, some cannabinoids (CBD, CBA) were found in biomass as well. Biological effects and cytotoxicity of mixed biomass were studied as well and it was confirmed that such enriched biomass can be safely used in food, feed and cosmetics industries.
