Original Abstract

The current population is struggling with several global problems. One of them is the excessive amount of petrochemical plastics. One solution to get out of the flood of plastics is the use of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). PHA are biodegradable and biocompatible biopolymers. PHA polymers have many advantages, but their production cost is still higher than that of plastics made from oil. How reduce their cost is to use extremophiles. Caldimonas thermodepolymerans (basionym Schlegelella thermodepolymerans) is thermophilic bacteria able to produce PHA. This bacterial species has the unique property of utilizing xylose. This contribution focuses on sugar metabolism and its interconnection with PHA synthesis in C. thermodepolymerans as auspicious candidate for PHA production under the frame of Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology concept.
