Original Abstract
Composite bone cement, widely used in orthopaedics and dentistry, often exhibits limitations in its mechanical properties. This study focusses on the modification of bone cement with phosphoserine and its impact on mechanical and degradation of modified bone cement. Phosphoserine, naturally found in the human body and linked to bone mineralization, was chosen as the additive. Modified cement preparation was optimized through additive adjustments, ratios, and integration methods. Mechanical tests, including compression tests, and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to measure cement properties and chemical composition. Results of mechanical tests show significant improvements, with maximum strength of 50% enhancement compared to the unmodified cement. Degradation tests revealed higher weight loss with more phosphoserine and scanning electron microscopy provided surface insights pre- and post-degradation. Introducing phosphoserine as an additive enhances composite bone cement's mechanical strength and degradation characteristics. This discovery holds great potential for enhancing bone cement performance and longevity in orthopaedics, dentistry, and bone-implant advancements.
