Original Abstract
The global issue of accumulating by-products from the food industry represents a significant challenge. Lignocellulosic materials belong to the group of these by-products. These materials have diverse applications, such as biofuel production, chemical synthesis, and the production of biodegradable polymers known as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). PHAs are biodegradable, biocompatible and can be generated from renewable resources as intracellular granules by various prokaryotic microorganisms. Lignocellulosic materials consist of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Through chemical and biochemical pretreatment, these materials can be hydrolyzed to obtain fractions suitable for synthesizing valuable substances. Cellulose and hemicellulose can be broken down into monosaccharides by high-pressure and thermal pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis, which serve as a carbon source for bacteria capable of producing PHAs. Utilizing lignocellulose-based resources as a substrate for PHA production presents an opportunity to reduce production costs.
