Original Abstract

In recent decades, the focus of research within the lignocellulosic biorefinery was set on by-product side streams in agricultural and forestry waste. Bio-based phenolic compounds are contained in tree barks and needles. These desirable aromatics are well-known as value-added products with antioxidant capacity. In this study, we present a systematic view of the extraction process of spruce bark (P. abies) and demonstrate the impact of the polarity by different solvents. The concentration of antioxidant activity compared to the amount of phenolic compound is shown. Gas chromatography with coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was implemented for the identification of phenolic target compounds. For an improved biorefinery concept, the behaviour of total phenolic content and antioxidant activity as a function of solvent polarity was investigated. Ethanol-water showed the highest concentration of phenolic compounds compared to water and chloroform extraction. Nine target compounds were identified by GC-MS.
