Original Abstract
Finding new utility areas for power plant ash goes hand in hand with the global problem of gradual impoverishment and depletion of natural deposits of certain commodities. Given the knowledge that fly ash is made up of a range of compounds and minerals of silicon, calcium, iron, aluminum, titanium and others, they can be used precisely as sources of some of the contained components. Using suitable, commercially and economically available reagents and subsequently common technological operations, preparing either activated precursors for subsequent production or finished products, which can also have very high purity, from these unused solid residues after coal combustion. To study the possibilities of obtaining selected components from the ash matrix, a wet method was chosen, i.e. extraction using an acidic solvent - sulfuric acid. The use of this extraction medium combines the advantages of dissolving all selected substances into a solution with the possibility of the potential use of waste sulfuric acid from various operations. To achieve higher extraction efficiencies of aluminum and titanium, the iron content in the sample has a decisive influence, which, as the least noble metal selected above, has the priority of leaching and in the initial stages, it makes it difficult to extract more noble metals (especially titanium) into the solution. The extraction efficiency of the selected components was monitored depending on the concentration of the extraction agent (5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 50% H2SO4), and extraction time (60, 120, 240 and 360 min). Furthermore, the effect of the addition of other mineral acids and hydrogen peroxide on the extraction efficiency was monitored.
