Original Abstract
Municipal wastewater reuse could be potenctially a sustainable and reliable water management solution in cities and densely populated regions facing negative drought effects as a main consequence of the climate change. Treated wastewater from the secondary wastewater treatment plants could be processed via pressure-driven membranes and returned into urban water cycle afterwards. Such a configuration encloses the full water and wastewater cycle from the source through distribution, collection and treatment ton its reuse, which follows the circular economy principles. Pressure-driven membrane processes already play an important role in several potable water reuse scenarios around the world. However, there is currently no such water recycling facility in the Central Europe region, especially in the Czech Republic. Despite the fact, there were more than 865 milion cubic meters of wastewater treated and discharged into recipients in the Czech Republic during 2020. This study evaluates the 10 months performance of an already existing pilot-scale ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) water recycling membrane unit. The unit has been designed for drinking water production from the municipal secondary wastewater treatment plant effluent. There were 36 chemical parameters evaluated to assess the performance of the UF and RO stages as well as the quality of the produced water. The parameters were evaluated according to valid Czech legislation.
