In last decade an important role in development of new materials for healthcare applications has played two-layered In last decade an important role in development of new materials for healthcare applications has played two-layered 1:1 phyllosilicate clay halloysite (HNT). HNT present unique combination of natural availability, good biocompatibility, high mechanical strength and high functionality. For application in biomedicine is the most significant that HNTs is environmental friendly and nontoxic. Further important feature of HNT is that it can be loaded with different chemically and biologically active substances into the inner and outer part of nanotubes. Moreover, by deposition of metals and/or metal oxides on external or interior HNTs wall diamagnetic HNT can be easily transformed into magnetically responsive nanomaterial. Several techniques have already been applied by our research team for magnetic modification of HNT [1-3]. In this work we studied effect of magnetised halloysite (MHNT) on structure and properties of electrospun nanofibers based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatine (Gel) blends. MHNT has been prepared by a simple modification procedure based on the interaction of HNT with perchloric acid stabilized magnetic fluid/methanol mixture [4]; magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles were strongly bound to halloysite nanotubes surface. It was found that by incorporation 6 - 12 wt. % MHNT in PCL/Gel nanofibers soft magnetic biocompatible materials have been prepared. Moreover, apart from magnetic properties strong reinforcing effect of MHNT has been confirmed. The highest improvement of mechanical properties was observed for nanofibers containing 9 wt. % MHNT when increase of tensile strength with comparison of virgin PCL/Gel nanofibers was more than double and elongation at break reached even fivefold improvement. To summarise, electrospun PCL/Gel blend nanofibers reinforced by MHNT are multifunctional, softmagnetic, environmentally friendly, biodegradable, high aspect ratio materials suitable for new biomedical and health care applications.
