Original Abstract
Designing medical products with tailorable functionality at affordable prices is still of great scientific interest. Our research has been focused on the challenge of developing wound coverings with complex desirable properties and wide accessibility to patients. This work combines natural, widely abundant and non-expensive polysaccharide gum karaya with natural protein silk fibroin with outstanding material properties to create biocompatible hydrogel coverings providing moist environment for enhanced healing of soft tissues mainly burn skin and ulcers. Hydrogels were developed and produced in an energy efficient way under mild conditions and without any toxic chemicals. The hydrogels were studied by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, contact angle measurement, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and mechanical testing to improve knowledge about protein/polysaccharide interactions. Moreover, cell testing with keratinocytes showed hydrogel nontoxicity and ability to perform as successful wound covering. The cells did not adhere to the hydrogels which is essential during regeneration to avoid destroying of new grown cells as the dressing is replaced. We believe that this work will contribute to knowledge about hydrogels and also will increase a potential availability of highly functional and affordable wound coverings on the market.
