Original Abstract
Burial of tea bags into soil and monitoring their weight loss was recently proposed as an alternative to the traditional litter bag technique. This approach was improved here by addition of analytical techniques and tested on two closely located but different soils. The tea bag technique seems to be sensitive to differences in soil types and soil environment which form the basis for the decomposition of organic matter in soils. The addition of elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and other techniques for the structural and chemical characterization provide further and more detailed insights into the decomposition process and its mechanism.
