Original Abstract
A novel plasma source based on the pin-hole discharge configuration is presented. The simple source configuration allows operation at applied voltage from 1 kV using DC, AC, high frequency as well as RF power supplies. The presented prototype consists of dielectric body from Macor ceramics and tungsten high voltage inner electrode. The second electrode can be made of different materials and can be mounted in coaxial configuration or placed anywhere in liquid. The distance between the inner electrode tip and the nozzle in the ceramics is adjustable. The source operates in conductive solutions with conductivity in the range 100 – 15000 μS/cm. The discharge itself shows self-pulsing operation with short spark like pulses of extremely high energy density (over 100 kW/mm3) producing strong acoustic waves. Although the device was originally developed for the surface cleaning of ancient archaeological objects its properties allow applications also in biomedicine.
