Sunscreen for Albinos: Rare award for the faculty and its members
On 13 June 2019, on the International Day of Albinism, the Faculty of Chemistry together with Andrea Hároniková (Institute of Food Chemistry and Biotechnology) received a prize for the production of sunscreen for people with albinism on the premises of the British Council of Ghana. The organisation Engage Now Africa, together with the Ghana Association of Persons with Albinism, appreciated the involvement of the faculty representatives in the development of an easily and cheaply produced sunscreen from local raw materials by people without chemical education, special technology or equipment.
The same day, with considerable attention from the Ghanaian community and the media, the product was introduced to the African market. The sunscreen in the SPF version 30 is available under the name MELA-PROTECT. Production of the cream with SPF 50 will begin in Ghana this summer. The crowdfunding campaign helped to start the production in Ghana when it raised over 360,000 CZK. Production within the local community began in June.
