Being part of the team
Tomaž Maroh is a master student at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. From the wide selection of international traineeships facilitated by IASTE, he chose to come to Brno and work for two months in a lab at the Faculty of Chemistry.
Being able to be part of BioKol research group and under the supervision of Jiri Smilek was a big honour for me. Thinking of how many new things I’ve learned and that I was able to transfer the theoretical knowledge from the university back at home into a practical one here. I was able to feel like being the equivalent part of the research group, being trusted with performing the tests and experiments on the equipment I wouldn’t be able to use otherwise, and having a supportive mentor and colleagues, at the end, it really means a lot to have that one.
Academically, I grew a lot during this internship, as well as personally. The saying that is following me all my life is: “There are no problems, only the solutions. Sometimes you just need to try harder to find them.” It would really perfectly describe this internship. From all of the staff at the university to the research group, basically, everyone here tried their best to be always there available for anything that you need and to make this experience unforgettable. Taking an internship abroad represents a huge advantage to grow even more. As well as it helped me to know how to participate in the research group, it was also a step forward to know how to work in a foreign environment and learn a lot about the culture, traditions, and language…
All of it while being surrounded by the kindest and most supportive people is indeed priceless. I would, by heart, recommend taking it to everyone, the one at VUT will definitely stay with me as one of the best lifetime memories. I would like to thank a lot to my supervisor Jiri Smilek and also to my consultant Monika Trudicova. Na shledanou! 😊
