Lettuce, as one of many edible vegetables, is often grown hydroponically to maximize yield and conserve water resources. Composed of approximately 95% water, lettuce is particularly well-suited for hydroponic cultivation, which frequently utilizes treated wastewater as a cost-effective and sustainable practice. However, this wastewater can be contaminated with pharmaceutical residues, including their degradation products and metabolites, originating from sources such as domestic sewage and hospital effluents. These substances can be absorbed by crops, primarily through their roots, translocated to the leaves and/or potentially undergo further metabolization. This contamination not only contributes to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance but also poses health risks due to the long-term intake of pharmaceutical residues through vegetable consumption. As the majority of pharmaceutical metabolites have not yet been identified, current monitoring practices remain limited. When conducted, they predominantly focus on quantifying parent compounds, which leads to an underestimation of both environmental and health risks. A novel high-throughput workflow for the annotation of pharmaceutical metabolites in environmental samples was introduced.
