Potentially toxic elements (PTE) are a group of substances that in higher amounts can cause intoxication of the organism and disruption of physiological processes, irreversible histopathological changes, carcinogenicity, and more. Fish are great bioindicators, reflecting the quality of the stream in which they live. An important factor is how the organism is exposed to PTE, i.e. what are the routes of exposure (gills, gastrointestinal tract, skin), how long the exposure period is and how long are these elements able to persist in the organism before they are eliminated from the body. Higher concentrations of the elements in water could induce certain behavioral changes and associated reproductive problems, even death of individuals in extreme conditions. In the case of lower exposure concentrations, accumulation of the elements in the bodies of the fish predominates. Within trophic levels, biomagnification may occur. Fish often form part of the human diet. In the event of accumulation of PTE in fish flesh, humans are exposed to these contaminants which may lead to negative effects on the human body. With regard to food legislation, only cadmium, lead and mercury are regulated and should be carefully monitored when fish is placed on the market. This study focuses on the PTE in the bodies of fish that have been obtained from the Jihlava River which has long been assessed by the Ministry of the Environment as a polluted watercourse. The aim of the study was to assess the pollution of the watercourse and to evaluate whether these fish are suitable for consumption.
