Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biodegradable and biocompatible biopolyesters with bioorigin. PHAs are synthesized by numerous microorganisms under specific nutrient-limitation conditions and serve as intracellular storage materials for carbon and energy in the starvation phase. PHA is the name for a large group of homopolymers and copolymers showing viscoelastic properties on a broad scale, from stiff, brittle material to elastomeric properties. Research concerning the biotechnological production of PHA with various chemical structures and, consequently, variable physical properties has been of increasing significance over the past 20 years. This chapter focuses on PHA with viscoelastic behavior typical for thermoplastic elastomers. It is shown that there are a few ways to prepare PHA with elastomeric behavior, including melt blending, biosynthesis, and chemical modifications.
