Oleganious red yeasts (Rhodotorula, Cystofilobasidium and Sporobolomyces) are nonconventional yeasts with ability to accumulate significant amounts of lipids and lipidsoluble metabolites (sterols and pigments). In low-cost biotechnological production of the enriched biomass the price of input substrate is important. Advantage of red yeast is ability to to utilize a wide range of cheap substrates (whey, glycerol, animal fat etc.). In order to develop an efficient bioconversion of different substrates into lipid-rich yeast biomass, an extensive screening of both red yeasts and substrates is needed. Modern vibrational spectroscopic techniques spectroscopy has shown a large potential to be utilized in extensive screenings, especially when screening metabolites are lipids and pigments. For this study were used Fourier-transformation infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy – complementary techniques with ability to perform high-throughput analysis of intact cells. With combination of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy is possible to obtain biochemical profiling of grown biomass and allows to focus on lipid/pigment profiling.
