In this study, three different methods for extraction drug residues from river sediments were tested. Sulphonamide antibiotics, which belong to a group of pharmaceuticals widely used in human and veterinary medicine were selected as target compounds. They are discharged to the sewer systems together with the urine and faeces and enter to the wastewater treatment plant, where they are not completely removed. Their further negative impact on the ecosystem cannot therefore be excluded. Sulphonamide antibiotics were isolated from sample of river sediment by three different methods: ultrasonic extraction (USE), pressurized solvent extraction (PSE) and microwave-assisted extraction techniques (MAE). These three methods were compared and the most suitable method was found. Samples were concentrated and cleaned using solid phase extraction (SPE). For determination these antibiotics high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector was used.
