The ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer was filled with magnesium hydroxide with particle size varying from 20 nm to 2 um. At temperatures above 350 C, magnesium hydroxide decomposed endothermally to MgO and H2O. Such reaction is widely used to reduce flammability of polyolefins. However, in the case of nano-sized magnesium hydroxide, large portion of polymer matrix is in direct contact with filler surface due to the high specific surface area of the filler used. Large filler-matrix contact area can result in surface induced catalytic effects accelerating polymer degradation rather than inhibiting it. In this contribution, the effect of Mg(OH)2 particle size on the thermal degradation and flammability of model EVA nanocomposite is presented.
