This study focused on the mobility of two antibiotics in a real soil column. As a model antibiotics tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole were used. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to a treat wide variety of susceptible infections caused by both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tract infections caused by both gram-negative and positive bacteria. Nowadays, the problem with antibiotics and other drugs in the environment is global. Due to overuse, incomplete absorption and metabolism may occur, and an unutilized part of pharmaceuticals is discarded into the environment through urine and feces. Unfortunately, this is not the only way how they can get into the environment. Sometimes they may be unproperly discarded, such as via toilet, drain, or simply thrown into the waste. Therefore, it is very important to study the behavior of drugs in the environment. The experiments were performed in situ in plastic tubes to create an isolated column of soil with either filtration paper soaked in drug solution or drug solution as a source of the determined drug. After a specific period, was one tube taken out of the soil, and divided into 6 layers. 5 g of the soil from each layer was leached in tap water, distilled water, and magnesium chloride for two days. Concentrations of the drugs were measured in the leachates and soil layers were analyzed using different methods after this time period. In addition, we performed simple batch sorption and desorption experiments on each soil layer. 1 g of the soil from each layer was mixed with drug solution and mixed for two days. Using different methods, concentrations of the drugs were determined and used to calculate the effective diffusion coefficient.
