The use of microalgae biomass or produced substances is already widespread in the food industry. It serves as an excellent source of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and, to a lesser extent, other substances such as those with antioxidant properties. However, the disadvantage of microalgae production is the long cultivation time due to their autotrophic nature. In this work, mixo/heterotrophic microalgae were used, whose production speed is several times higher than that of autotrophic microalgae. Microalgae were cultivated under mixo or heterotrophic conditions on different carbon sources. The profile of selected metabolites was observed depending on the given organic substrate and the type of trophic cultivation. The samples were tested for lipophilic pigments and fatty acids produced. The use of mixotrophic or heterotrophic microalgae appears to be a suitable option for the utilization of food industry waste materials, while producing a range of valuable metabolites. Due to their faster growth rate compared to autotrophic microalgae, their use in co-cultivations with other heterotrophic organisms can also be considered.
