Waste valorization by co-cultivation with microalgae and yeasts is a relatively new trend. In this study co-cultivations of carotenogenic yeast R. toruloides and microalgae C. minutissima were used. Waste substrates were added as a source of nutrients for the heterotrophic yeast. The main idea was not only the valorization of waste oil-based substrates, but also greater biomass and preferred metabolites production as well as affected profile of produced fatty acids. The microorganisms were cultivated with waste frying oil, waste coffee oil, and poultry fat that served as an alternative carbon source. As a pilot study for further experimentation, the effect of oil in the medium, algal and yeast adaptability, and capability to survive, and the effects of co-cultivating these two microorganisms were tested. In the future, it will be necessary to focus on large-scale cultivations, modification of the ratios of glycerol and waste substrates, and the ratios of the microorganisms themselves in the media.
