Bio-based material precursors are one of the most promising alternatives to commercially used artificial curable resins in order to increase the amount of bio-content in the structures of formed polymers. Monomer alkyl esters of biopolymers such as poly(lactide) (PLA) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) were used for the synthesis of curable precursors containing methacrylate functional groups which can be radically polymerized. These synthesized curable molecules were analyzed via numerous verification methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), or Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The reactivity and curability of the synthesized product were investigated. Also, the mechanical properties of cured polymers were measured via dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) provided information regarding the thermal stability of prepared resins. The results uncovered that methacrylated alkyl lactates exhibited a higher degree of cure, storage modulus, and thermal stability than polymerizable methacrylated alkyl 3-hydroxybutyrates. However, curable esters based on depolymerized P3HB contained higher bio-source mass.
