Introduction: Lipid nanoparticles have been developed with the progress in nanotechnology and their unique properties have made them one of the most widely used nanoparticles [1]. Materials & Methods: The presented work is focused on two types of nanostructured particles, liposomes and PHB-liposome particles. Materials were functionalized by active compounds, thymol and vitamin E. Liposomes were overall tested for stability, gradual release of incorporated substances in the model environment and biological activity. Liposomal size and colloid stability were defined by dynamic light scattering and zeta-potential. Particles were subjected to the characterization of gradual release using the spectrophotometric method into model environments. Antimicrobial activity and synergic effect against gram-positive and gram-negative strains of microorganisms were also evaluated. To assess whether prepared nanostructured materials are suitable for further cosmetic applications, a cytotoxicity assay on HaCaT cell line was carried out. Results: It was observed that the used lipid particles were stable and showed antimicrobial and non-cytotoxic activity. Conclusion: To conclude, functional liposomal particles show promising results for various applications as cosmetic preservation and pharmaceutical antimicrobial products.
