Low-temperature extrusion 3D printing of gels and ceramic pastes for medical purposes has certain specifics compared to standard methods of 3D printing of polymers (e.g., Fused Deposition Modelling, Inkjet Printing, Laser Sintering, etc.). Gels and pastes for extrusion printing should contain a polymer component that is characterized by thixotropic behavior. In addition, polymer/ceramic composite pastes for 3D printing e.g., bone substitutes are unstable over time due to their self-hardening. These material specifics greatly influence the processability of the materials and thus the characteristic adjustable parameters of 3D printers. In this study, 3 different 3D printers were compared - either custom-modified or professional ones. The printers were compared in terms of the possibilities of adjustable parameters of 3D printing on the final filament properties of both bone cement pastes and polymeric gels. Moreover, selected connections between rheological properties and important 3D printing settings for the successful preparation of macro-porous test scaffolds will be discussed.
