The widespread use of antibiotics plays a key role in the management of infectious diseases in livestock. An estimated 5 507,4 tonnes of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) were used in European countries in 2020 and nowadays consumption is still growing. They are not only used for therapeutic use, but VAs are also used to increase production in animal husbandry (in EU banned since 2006). However, depending on pharmacokinetics, specific transformation processes and the antibiotic class, between 30 % to 90 % of the drug dosage can be excreted nonmetabolized in form of feces or urine. Consequently, these pharmaceuticals can be introduced into the terrestrial environment via various routes (e.g., animal waste). In Europe, the recycling practice of organic residues onto soils is widely encouraged, as part of circular economy. Increasing concentrations of antimicrobials and especially antibiotic resistance in the environment are a potential threat to all living organisms. Therefore, the aim of the project financed by Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic (Project Name: Antimicrobial resistance in soil and other parts of environment) was to develop analytical method for quantification of fluoroquinolones in various types of matrixes (SPE; LC-MS/MS), followed by analysis of obtained samples from hall of chicken farm (poultry litter samples) and from test field experiments (soils samples before and after application of poultry litter). Besides quantification of fluoroquinolones (FQs), the aim of the present study was also to carry out an analysis of the occurrence of resistance genes to FQs in soil samples from our field experiments.
