This contribution provides a complex assessment of heavy metal soil pollution and contains also summarization of the sources of heavy metal soil pollution. Selected often using pollution indices were divided into two groups: single indices and total complex indices of pollution/contamination with classes of pollution. The single indices as indicators of soil pollution are Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Enrichment Factor (EF), Pollution Index (PI) and Contamination factor (CF). The total complex indices of pollution include integrated indices, such as Sum of Pollution Index (PIsum), Average Pollution Index (PIAvg), Integrated Pollution Index (IPI), Integrated Threshold Pollution Index (IPIT), Pollution Load Index (PLI), New Pollution Index (PIN), Nemerow Pollution Index (PINemerow), Degree of Contamination (Cdeg), Modified Contamination Factor (mCdeg), and indices of ecological risk - Potential Ecological Risk Index (PERI), Mean ERM Quotient (MERMQ), and Contamination Severity Index (CSI). In addition, based on the comparison of the heavy metal concentrations in soils selected world areas and calculated indices of pollution/contamination in soils confirmed and verified their wide application in the field of ecological and geochemistry assessment of soils.
