The complexation and transport/immobilization ability of humic acids are the most important environmental qualities of these substances. Therefore, the study on these properties are important both for understanding role of humic substances in natural systems and human-driven applications. In this contribution, reactivity and transport properties of humic acids in hydrogels are studied. Agarose hydrogels containing humic acids are used as model mediums for complexation and diffusion experiments. In order to evaluate the influence of reactivity of humic acids and pores structure of hydrogels, experiments were carried out both with three types of hydrogels: pure agarose hydrogels, hydrogels containing native humic acids and hydrogels containing humic acids with selectively blocked functional groups by methylation. Two different metal ions (Cu2+, Ni2+) and two different dyes (methylene blue, rhodamine R6G) are used as reactivity/diffusion probes for experiments in diffusion cells. Obtained results confirmed the strong effect of interactions of humic acids with metal ions and cationic dyes as well as the influence of size of diffusion probes on their diffusivity in humic hydrogels. The blocking of functional groups reflected in changed values of diffusivity in comparison to the gels prepared from native humic acids and the diffusivity of metal ions.
