The paper is thematically focused on the use of advanced composite materials in real application areas of buildings exposed to extreme environmental stress. It describes the design of a structural element reinforced with non-metallic FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) reinforcement and its subsequent experimental verification. Based on the analysis of the market, a vehicular traffic cover plate was selected, which is significantly exposed to aggressive environment and direct running wheel vehicles. As a pilot element, it was chosen a simple square-shaped slab with dimensions of 2,1 x 2,1 m. All reinforcement, i.e., bending and shear, was designed as composite reinforcements according to the instructions introduced in European and American guidelines. The design has been verified by numerical simulations, the results of which were used for subsequent configuration of the real loading test. By comparing the data obtained from the numerical solution and experimental verification of the element behavior was confirmed the design of element using only composite reinforcement as an alternative to greatly exposed environment.
