The application of thermal analysis techniques to different types of materials

This contribution is usually mainly devoted to the application of thermal analysis techniques (i.e., Thermogravimetry, Differential Thermal Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry) to different types of crystalline and amorphous materials, aiming at investigating their thermal behavior and trying to assess the thermal stability.

The present lecture will focus on the characterization of silica-based gel glasses (GGs), Organic-Inorganic Hybrids (OIHs) and Halloysite NanoTubes (HNTs), with particular reference to dehydration and dehydroxylation processes occurring in these materials. The concluding part will stress mainly the contribution of kinetic analysis of these processes on distinguishing between water weakly bound (physisorbed) and that strongly adsorbed into the structure of the material. This conclusion has been drawn on the basis of a simple assumption: higher activation energies are expected for vaporization of water from wet particles rather than that for vaporization of bulk water if the interaction between water molecules and the surface is stronger than the interaction between water molecules. Some examples will be provided in this respect.

Prof. Ciprioti is the author of about 140 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals and more than 100 contributions at national and international congresses dedicated to the development of thermal analysis in the fields of environment, pharmacy, food and cultural heritage, with special reference to kinetic and thermodynamic studies of chemical processes and phase transformations. His works have yielded more than 2,500 citations, Hirsch index=30.

Since 2020, he is the chairman of the Italian Association of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (A.I.C.A.T.).

From 2022, he is the chairman (from 2020 to 2021, co-chairman) of the International Scientific Committee of “Thermodynamics & Thermochemistry” of the International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (International Scientific Committee of “Thermodynamics & Thermochemistry” of ICTAC, International Confederation of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, http: //www.ictac.org/scientific_commission.html).

He works as an editor for several international journals:
